September 2024
Dear Friends and Supporters,
It has been an interesting year so far with the Media Health and Rights Initiative of Nigeria, the month of September was exceptional like no other as we continued to build on the work we began in 2023 to ensure an end to unsafe abortions in Nigeria. This month has been particularly eventful and impactful, and we are excited to share our progress and activities with you.
Engaging Social Media Content
This month, our social media platforms were buzzing with engaging content aimed at triggering empathy in audiences for women who have and need abortion services. Through powerful stories, informative posts, and interactive discussions, we have been able to foster a more understanding and supportive community. Please find here a link to our more engaging post of the month.
Webinar with Students on Contraception and Unsafe Abortions
We opened a thought-provoking debate among students on whether more contraception information and services will put an end to unsafe abortions in Nigeria. The discussions were insightful and highlighted the importance of comprehensive sexual education and accessible contraception in reducing unsafe abortions. We also directed them to some freshly published resources on the Love Matters Naija website which is an extensive resource for everything on Sexual Reproductive Health for everybody. Launch of “Law, Rights and Community Empowerment for Social Change in TB, HIV, and Malaria Response”
In partnership with Lawyers Alert, we started an exciting new project titled “Law, Rights and Community Empowerment for Social Change in TB, HIV, and Malaria Response.” This initiative aims to ensure better gender responsiveness and empower communities to drive social change in the fight against these diseases. Our visits to stakeholders in Benue and Akwa Ibom states revealed several critical issues worth considering including Global Shortage of TB Drugs, ASACA’s Initiatives, Challenges in Malaria Programs and Stakeholders. You can read more about this here.
Looking Ahead
The new month of October breeds great occurrences. Stay tuned for more information on the SRHR Summit 1.0 where we ensured to take note of the gaps in access to more sexual reproductive health services including safe abortions.
Our work towards providing a more inclusive and engaging platform to meet one of our goals- safe space engagement can kick off with your support on the realization of the PADICHAT project, a comprehensive AI platform that is aimed at giving SRHR response to young people in record time. You can support this goal by clicking this link, liking and commenting to count as a vote for MHR.
We also look forward to pushing for better gender responsiveness by empowering our digital communities to drive social change when it comes to issues around TB, HIV/AIDS and Malaria as they intersect with women’s sexual health.
So watch out …
As we move forward, we remain committed to our mission of promoting sexual and reproductive health rights and ensuring safe and supportive environments for all. We are grateful for your continued support and look forward to sharing more updates and successes with you in the coming months.
Thank you for being a part of our journey.
Warm regards,
The Media Health and Rights Initiative of Nigeria Team
